After a week of insightful discussions and exchanges, the CIVITAS Forum 2024 concluded on 3 October 2024 in Parma, Italy.
As part of the event, ELABORATOR joined the Urban Public Space Design Thematic Corner alongside its sister projects REALLOCATE, Just Streets, and AMIGOS. It was a great opportunity to share all about our project and exchange with cities, individuals, and initiatives spearheading innovation in sustainable mobility.
Additionally, project partners urbana and AMAT - Agenzia Mobilità, Ambiente e Territorio presented ELABORATOR’s approach to inclusive mobility, emphasizing the importance of co-creation and accessible data services.
Engaging local communities for inclusive mobility
urbana presented during a dedicated session titled “How Community-Driven Initiatives Can Reshape Urban Mobility", highlighting the importance of engaging local communities in the co-design of transport systems and how this is being done in ELABORATOR. By integrating diverse perspectives, mobility solutions can better reflect the needs and expectations of all citizens.
Community participation is essential to ensuring that transport systems serve everyone. Encouraging residents to take part in the design process fosters inclusivity and leads to more sustainable outcomes. Many current transportation models primarily cater to work-related commutes, often overlooking the needs of women and vulnerable groups. In Europe, women’s caregiving responsibilities significantly influence their mobility patterns, a phenomenon known as the “mobility of care.” Discussions at the forum focused on innovative ways to make public spaces safer and more accessible for everyone.
Universal accessibility and Mobility as a Right
AMAT - Agenzia Mobilità, Ambiente e Territorio, representing ELABORATOR's Lighthouse city Milan, participated in a session titled 'Creating Universal Accessibility – Fulfilling Mobility as a Right for All'. This session aimed at exploring innovative approaches and successful projects fostering universal accessibility, particularly for people with reduced mobility. By leveraging community engagement, data-driven methodologies, inclusive mobility services and enlightened governance, AMAT shared how the city of Milan will focus on making its Olympic routes universally accessible, deploying cutting-edge sensors for visually impaired individuals and implementing tactical urbanism strategies along Via Novara. The interventions are using stakeholder engagement methods to ensure that diverse perspectives—from disability advocacy groups to urban planners—are integrated into the design and implementation phases.
By addressing these unique mobility challenges, ELABORATOR continues to work towards transport solutions that are inclusive, environmentally sustainable, and accessible to all users. Participation in the CIVITAS Forum 2024 reinforced the importance of collaboration and innovation in shaping cities that work for everyone.
