Co-designing inclusive and sustainable urban mobility through collaboration and innovation: ELABORATOR at CSuM 2026

How can cities create mobility systems that are sustainable, accessible, and inclusive for everyone?


This question will be at the centre of the ELABORATOR special session on 1 July, day one of the 2026 edition of the Conference on Sustainable Mobility, held on the Greek island of Skyros on 1-3 July. The session, titled “Co-designing inclusive and sustainable urban mobility through collaboration and innovation”, will bring together experts, researchers, and city representatives to share practical experiences from across Europe.


The session will showcase how ELABORATOR is helping cities accelerate the transition towards climate-neutral and people-centred mobility through collaboration, digital innovation, and evidence-based experimentation. Through a series of presentations, participants will discover how co-creation and stakeholder engagement can lead to more effective and equitable urban mobility solutions.


One of the key topics is gender-inclusive mobility planning, with insights from the Lighthouse city of Trikala, Greece. Researchers will present how surveys and co-creation workshops have helped identify mobility challenges faced by women, caregivers, and other vulnerable groups, supporting the development of more inclusive transport policies and planning processes.


The session will also feature Superbarrio, an innovative digital co-design tool developed by the ELABORATOR partner IAAC. Through realistic 3D environments and interactive visualisations, citizens can explore mobility improvements and contribute directly to the design of safer, more accessible public spaces. This demonstrates how digital technologies can strengthen public participation and support better urban planning decisions.


Another presentation will highlight experiences from the Zaragoza Living Lab, where participatory tools and data collection methods have been used to support tactical urbanism interventions. By combining citizen input with real-world measurements and analytics, cities can better understand mobility needs and evaluate the impacts of proposed solutions.


The importance of collaboration will be another central theme. ELABORATOR partners will share lessons learned on engaging stakeholders, decision-makers, and users throughout the planning and implementation process, demonstrating how cooperation can help create mobility systems that are truly accessible and responsive to local needs.


The session will conclude with presentations on innovative mobility interventions implemented in Trikala and on simulation activities assessing and scaling mobility measures across six European cities. These examples illustrate how local experimentation, digital tools, and policy innovation can work together to support safer, cleaner, and more resilient urban transport systems.


By bringing together diverse perspectives and practical experiences, this special session highlights the value of co-creation and innovation in shaping the future of sustainable urban mobility across Europe.
